  1. Designing for Organizational Agility

The next generation of Lean Methods, such as Kanban, have provided a platform for continuous improvement and constant learning. The thinking behind these techniques promotes an organizational structure that is radically different than traditional perspectives allow.

By and large, organizational design thinking has not kept up. Current Org design initiatives often result in optimizing a highly hierarchical, specialist soloed, command and control structure. Lean, Kanban and Agile change agents struggle with those responsible for refreshing the org design.

In this workshop Jeff Anderson will facilitate an organizational design methods that allows participants to define an organizational structure that promotes service…

    • Strategy Deployment for the Agile Enterprise

Many organisations implement Agile as an isolated initiative with no explicit connection to any overall strategy. This often results in a Cargo Cult Agile implementation, which makes some local improvements, but delivers no overall company benefits. Strategy Deployment is needed to align an Agile Transformation with the organisation's key goals. Thus, Agility becomes an explicit strategic intent for the whole organisation, with Agile processes and tools being be used as tactical solutions to be tried.

This workshop will introduce Strategy Deployment, using a framework call the X-Matrix, and show how an Agile Transformation can be viewed as a form of…

      • One Kanban to Organizational Adoption - a case study of evolutionary approach to a scaled Kanban implementation

Many organizations are unaware of the benefits of Kanban. Using LKU's techniques and approach to evolutionary change has created a revolution in the organization. Starting with one team, lead times, graphs, and slide decks has let to a viral adoption of Kanban that has reached the desk of the CTO, President and COO. This hour long talk will share the case study of a kanban transformation of a $100 million private technology energy company and what techniques that were used to drive influence to change.

        • Case Study: Bridging the Divide between an Agile Development Group and a Waterfall Business Group

Even when there is wide support for agile methods of development, teams often face a clash of philosophies when it comes to commitments to the business. We also know it is not easy to change a long established business culture. You are not going to take a company that is used to planning a whole years worth of work from a business perspective and expect them to act in line with Lean principles overnight.

In this session I will introduce my group's history, the special circumstances that lead us to a Lean/Kanban inspired agile process, and what problems we are…

          • Lean-Kanban Program Management and Coaching

Lean Kanban Method, for managing and coaching large program that has both scrum teams and traditionally managed resource pools.

This session is about managing a large program where the organization is in the midst of Agile transition. There are some Scrum teams and many traditionally managed resource pools. How do you manage a large program when there are incremental and iterative agile teams that are working alongside traditionally managed resource pools? Using a magic wand to wish all traditionalists will start “being scrummified" auto-magically is not an option. How do you work through the real-world challenges? Can evolutionary change "habits"…

            • From Lean Coffee to Vigorous Learning Organizations: Building a resilient and responsive future

The Compression Institute is building a global network of vigorous learning circles to support the development of full-fledged Vigorous Learning Organizations (VLO) which we have been advocating for some time. “Vigorous” denotes learning by doing, using systems offering enactive mastery experiences, developing emotional control and comprehensive analytical & cognitive skill. Vigorous learning is the essence of a well-honed organizational system for addressing problems, both wicked and tame, with a new worldview. If widely adopted, it could supersede prevailing methods of human organization. We've started this dialog-based network with a series of lean coffees. This talk will share our ideas about…

              • How Kanban changed my life as a Project Manager, and how to overcome resistance to Kanban using convincing metrics & showing predictability

For many years I have been working as a self-employed Project Manager (PM), and am a convinced “agilist”. In the beginning of my agile journey I mainly worked with Scrum on my software projects. Loving the visualization part in particular, I had a strong wish to apply agile techniques to my own PM work as well, but soon felt that Scrum was not really fitting my needs. I also saw that there were parts of the organizations I worked for where Scrum just would not work.

When I first experienced that the restrictions in Scrum could actually prevent project efficiency,…

                • Technical Practices in a Kanban Environment

High performing software teams use a variety of modern technical practices including Test Driven Development, Pair/Mob Programming, Refactoring, Evolutionary Design, and Continuous Integration & Delivery.

In this session, learn how Kanban's four Foundational Principles and six Core Practices relate to these technical practices, which in turn make Kanban more powerful.

                      • Raising the Bar: Using LeanKanban and Agile for Sustained Sucess

Four years ago we were experiencing growing pains going from 50 software professionals working on one platform to 150 software professionals working on three platforms. This talk will discuss how we used LeanKanban and Agile to solve problems with requirements churn, addressed the "hurry up and wait" sense of urgency for our developers, on-boarding issues with onsite and off-shore teams, and designing an organization that empowered teams to develop great software products which are used by more than 5,000,0000 students daily across the globe.

                        • If you need to start a project, you’ve already failed

I want to be controversial for a moment and propose an end to IT projects, project management & project managers. I propose that the entire project process is flawed from the start for one simple reason. If you need to run a project, you’ve already failed.

By definition, an IT project is a temporary structure to govern and deliver a complex change (such as a new product or platform) into an organisation. However, to be truly competitive, an organisation needs to be able to deliver a continuous stream of change. Managed properly, this negates the need for a project and…

So you’ve heard about this Kanban thing and want to know where to start, or maybe you’ve been using it for a while and you want to know where to go. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll start at the very beginning and teach you how to build a Value Stream Map and use that to define your inital Kanban and WIP limits.
